Happy Groundhog Day 2010!!

The Lore of Groundhog Day goes back for hundreds of years, arriving in America with settlers from Germany and France, going back to the Candlemas (the ending of Christmas with the Candle Mass). There is also the legend that Indians settling in the Delaware area believe that life started and ended with animals. Their ancestors would return in the groundhog or wood chuck. And so the legend was born, in one way or another. In the States, the legend says that if the groundhog sees his shadow, that there will be six more weeks of winter. As long as I can remember, the most infamous groundhog in the States is Punxsutawney Phil, has ALWAYS seen his shadow!

From Phil's own news release from Punxsutawney, PA (http://www.punxsutawneyphil.com/ -- he has his own freaking website)

Phil Says Six More Weeks!

Phil's official forecast as read February 2nd, 2010 at sunrise at Gobbler's Knob:

Hear Ye Hear Ye Hear Ye

On Gobbler's Knob on this glorious Groundhog Day, February 2nd, 2010, Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators awoke to the call of President Bill Deeley and greeted his handlers, John Griffiths and Ben Hughes.

After casting a joyful eye towards thousands of his faithful followers, Phil proclaimed, "If you want to know what's next, you must read my text. As the sky shines bright above me, my shadow I see beside me. So six more weeks of winter it will be."

I, personally, like to remember Groundhog Day with Bill Murray's 1993 classic film, "Groundhog Day" where the main character gets to relive Groundhog Day over and over again until he gets it right. Here's a peek at one of my favorites, Groundhog Day.

And some of my favorite scenes!

Happy Groundhog Day Dotttie!
I do confess that I have no idea why you celebrate it, so thanks for this

Hi B!

Neither do we!! LOL It's a silly little tradition to let us greet the next six long weeks of winter as gracefully as possible, though no one is likes the idea of six more weeks of winter at this point, lol. February is one of the coldest months here in Illinois and, but thankfully, it's short, so at least it's over quickly. Almost painless. Have a great Groundhog Day!!

(Start a new tradition there in Finland and celebrate with us, lol. It's a strange little day, but I imagine in Pennsylvania, it's quite popular and a real money maker. Here is just another cold day of winter.)

As much as I hate cold, I'm glad for it. Last year was horrible with the insects down here in South. We need this cold weather.

That was a hilarious movie, Dottie.

Then there are the times when the southern groundhog and Phil differ, lol! When that happens we usually get an ice storm, blech.

I see you have a book up of one of my favorite authors, Sherrilyn Kenyon, sigh...

I love love love this movie. My hubby and I have watched it so many times I can even tell you.

Hi Donna!

LOL, I completely understand. Here the bugs are done by October. You have a few moths hanging on in the shrubs or a praying mantis or two, but that's it. I hate bugs and the flying kind are the worse. The damn Japanese Beetles are horrible, they get in the house, car, your clothing, anything and try to live inside.

We hope for a good hard freeze to kill all the infectious viruses floating around, especially at the schools. But by the time February rolls around, it's been hard freezing for over a month, usually two, so we're sick of freezing and hoping for the early Spring, never happens though, but we can dream!

Hope it gets cold enough to kill off the insects in your neck of the woods!

((hugs))

Hi Sia!

Yep, Groundhog Day is a favorite here, my kids love it too.

I hate ice storms, we get a couple every winter. Makes drive horrendous. We just had a week ago Monday, my kid slid off the road while his friend was driving them home from school. Really hate the ice!!! Hope you don't get any!

I'll include you Kenyon's giveaway.

((hugs))
