Monday Morning Flash Fiction Challenge, Week 3 ......... The Friday Flash Fiction Post

Good Morning Blogosphere Peeps!

And guess what?  It's time for the Friday post, my answer to the Monday Morning Flash Fiction Challenge, and again, I was most definitely challenged. I struggled trying to find a way to express the image, and okay, I have a confession to make. I woke this morning only to realize Friday morning had arrived and I, much to my chagrin, was unprepared, procrastination has become a true art form for me.

So, with the first free 45 minutes of my Friday morning, this is my interpretation of the image { forgive me the editing, I sure there are plenty of errors :) }

Starry, Starry Night
by Dottie Taylor
word count:  350

As I climbed the burial mound of generations long passed, I raised my face to the night sky, the twin moons gazed back at me. Home. Rigel. Where once the plains breathed life, now was desolation. Lonely. Again, I raised my face, scenting the air, hoping to discover I wasn't alone, but if there was life, it didn't answer me. And it was killing me. Where had all my family gone?

Each night became a ritual, easier to visit as the wolf, my favorite animal to call. Wolves never traveled alone, until now. I pawed the ground, lifted my snout to the breeze, scenting as I had every night. Nothing. Before I could stop myself, my lips peeled back and a despaired howl left them. No answering call, no feeling of my pack closing in, coming to my call.

I turned to trudge home, through the almost Serengeti grass that whispered in a sudden zephyr causing me to stand stock still. My ears pricked, my senses roused, my haunches tensed to spring. The wind had finally brought a scent, but an unwelcome one.

Aevrel, ancient enemy of the wolf, was out there stalking somewhere through the darkness. Was he the reason for my aloneness? Did he know what happened? The need to seek his answers crawled beneath my fur to creep along my flesh, raising each shaft of hair.

Shifting to the hawk, the sharpness of my beaded vision enabled me to pinpoint the smallest movement. There, the blades bristled, Aevrel. Free falling to land as wolf once more while Aevrel squirmed under my claws, teeth gnashing near his face, begging for flesh. My body quickly found it's two-legged form.

“What has happened to Rigel?” I demanded to the writhing figure below me.

Aevrel, afraid to meet my eyes. “There was a great hunt, each reaping a rapture.” He laughed boldly.

The wolf came as my jaws closed over his throat, head ripped from his body. My own fault, I had left seeking adventure. Howling with sorrow, I was alone where I once called home.

Anyway, that's my take. What did you come up with? I know it will be great! Leave me a link and I'll add it to my post, allowing all the blogosphere to taste your wondrous words. (Sometimes I get carried away, and besides, I took cold medicine this morning, lol, please endure along with me...) Thanks to Amy, Blodeuedd, and Michelle!

HAHA! Yes, you guys to tend to write a tad bit of violence :D.

I went really light this time. I guess I wanted to write how I wish I felt. Happy and glorious and wonderful...those things of which I am not feeling right now.

You may have only just wrote it this morning as I did while I sat in the Doc's office, but I think you did a wonderful job! It doesn't matter anyway, it;s the feelings you get when you're writing. I like it!

Hi B!

LOL, don't you hate when you computer gives you fits! I have considering opening the door and heaving it into the yard. Thankfully, calm heads usually prevail! I have to admit, sometimes it's user error on my part, lol, but the computer ends up baring the brunt of my frustration!

Can't wait to see what you've written!!

((hugs))
