Even Heroes Cry by Hildie McQueen

Hildie McQueen's New Release....

Even Heroes Cry, Fords of Nashville, Book 1

“Even though I knew they were just fireworks on the 4
th of July, to me they still sounded like incoming mortars. It took me right back to my deployment…”
Writing Adam Ford – Even Heroes Cry

An emotion filled, heroic read!

Buy Link: Amazon

I lay in the darkness, tears trailed from the corner of my eyes and plopped onto the pillow.  The video I’d watched replayed in my mind and I could not shake the heaviness in my chest at seeing the helplessness in so many young men’s eyes.  The vacant looks of no longer expecting life to ever get better. The loss of their personal life, after months or years of fighting for our country.

The research for Even Heroes Cry took its toll on me and yet I knew it was important if I was to try to bring the horror of PTSD to life in Adam Ford.  I had to feel what he felt and know as much as possible how it would affect a person.

Adam Ford was a leader in the military, someone in control who commanded soldiers. He raced head on into the most dangerous war zones. He flew a helicopter directly into lines of fire to save injured soldiers and carry them back to safety.  He jumped out of the safety of the chopper to drag men under sniper attack away from danger, getting shot multiple times while saving their lives.  Yes I was writing a larger than life hero, but he did exist to me.  He is real.
In the current thirteen year long war in the Middle East, many Adam Fords have risen to the challenges and done as much as my fictional hero. They’ve rushed through what seemed insurmountable obstacles to save their fellow servicemen or have died trying. Today’s heroes are young brilliant people who return home broken and damaged.

When I finished this story, I let out a breath, my eyes misted and I hoped that somehow I made Adam Ford a man that represented the battle these brave servicemen and women face upon returning from active fire directly into a different war that rages within.

Laura Foster isn't sure she has a reason to live after so many losses. Although she doesn't understand why Josiah insists on being her protector, his presence in her life becomes the only beacon of hope for a future.

Will they be able to ever come together and when they do will their love overcome secrets, tragedies and the danger that looms?

Josiah McClintock isn't your average Montana cowboy, he's hiding a secret that he's been unwilling to share. The Cole's took him in when he didn't have anywhere else to turn, after the death of his love, Hannah, and the kidnapping of her little sister, Emily. Now, he has the news he didn't want, both from his mother and from the detective searching for Emily. Should he return home as his mother demanded or should he continue with the life he'd made for himself in Montana?

Laura Foster has been abused most of her life. First by her parents and then from her common law husband, Frank Foster. If not for her infant son, Gabe, she'd be lost. After assuming Frank has died, she heads to Alder Gulch, and right into Josiah McClintock's life. Laura pulls in inside herself her tragedy strikes, and Josiah may be the only one who can understand. When he leaves, she assumes it forever. Can her heart survive as she realizes he's more important than she thought?

Blue Horizon by Hildie McQueen is another awesome cowboy romance. Hildie really knows how to bring the characters to life, to let you have a peek at their hopes, their dreams, and their love. I hope to see Nora's brother, Mitch find happiness. Excellent short story, quick romantic read.

Five out of five fairy kisses for this reader.

**Josiah story is both powerful and poignant. Big read is short pages.**

Westbound Awakening by Hildie McQueen

Publisher: Desert Breeze Publishing
Pages:

(Release Date: October 2013)

From the Cover:

Captain John McClain finds himself on the wrong end of a shotgun when attempting to find his child. Heading west to find the mother of his son and the outlaw who shot him, John is forced to escort an enticing woman whose lifestyle goes against every one of his moral standards, yet she calls to every part of him.

Heading west to meet the dying father she never knew, and possibly starting a new life, Mae Hawkins didn’t expect the added complication of traveling with the one man she always loved.

When they’re joined along the road by a minister and his wife, things get beyond complicated for John and Mae who awaken to the lesson that sometimes differences are more imagined than real in this unforgettable journey.

Mae Hawkins has always found herself attracted to the man, Captain John McClain, but she can't abide the disdain in his eyes for her chosen profession. She is the madame for the local brothel, one she inherited from her mother. What he doesn't know is the requirements her mother and Miss Lady put on her.

Captain John McClain can't see himself with someone who's sold her body for a few dollars, even if his own body screams for her. It isn't until he's alone with Mae for an extended period over the travel to Texas and after he losses more than he wanted to, for the realization of how silly his morals turn out to be. Now if he can only get Mae to accept him.

Westbound Awakening by Hildie McQueen is another western romance that I fell in love with, though at first, I was afraid I wouldn't. Captain John McClain had my nose pushed out of place, judging someone who deserved his consideration, not condemnation. But, I soon discovered what was driving this character, burned by love, shot by an outlaw, his child taken away. Mae Hawkins is a special kind of madame. She really cares for those she employs, and Miss Lady makes sure she takes care of herself as well. She's a misunderstood character that immediately captured my attention.

Westbound Awakening is a fun read of discovery... founding out what's really important in life and what isn't. I loved the tension between these real life feeling characters, and it takes the interest of another for Captain John McClain to see what he's really missing. Westbound Awakening is a sweet romance, a fun little historical that I can highly recommend to those who find themselves wishing for a western romance, this one is good!

Five out of five fairy kisses for this reader.

Big Sky Blue (Shades of Blue Trilogy) by Hildie McQueen

Publisher: Pink Door Publishing
Pages: 61

(Released: July 2, 2013)

From the Cover:

Left to raise his infant son alone, a hardened Hank Cole is determined to make the best of it while prospering his ranch, but when a beautiful woman literally lands on his doorstep, he is helpless against the attraction between them.

Elizabeth Dawson is too outspoken for gentle society, but she may be the perfect match for a tough Montana cowboy.

A story of two very different people who belong together, proof that sometimes fate can have a sense of humor when it comes to love.

Hank Cole has been put through the ringer of life lately. Marjorie, the mother of his little boy, Ashley, has left him, alone to raise their son. But, he was warned, she wasn't the marrying type and she was true to her word. Now, he's sworn off women altogether, it's going to be just him and Ashley.

Elizabeth Dawson was never one to want the socialite lifestyle, it's just not part of her personality, it bores her. And so does, Melvin, her parents' intended, and his kisses revile her. When tragedy strikes, ripping her parents from her life, she leaves her home in Virginia and heads to Montana to live with her widowed Aunt Betty. Little does she know fate awaits her in the form of a Montana cowboy.

Big Sky Blue by Hildie McQueen is an most excellent start to her new trilogy, Shades of Blue. Now, first I have to say I am not a cowboy romance reader, never have been, until now. This is a sweet romance that dances before the eyes of the reader until you find yourself trapped in the story. These two belong together, if only they can see it.

Big Sky Blue (love this title) does everything it promises and more, it sets up the trilogy to come nicely and makes the reader yearn for the story yet to come. The trilogy follows the Cole family (the cowboys of the family) and I can't wait to see where it takes them! Adding them to my TBR list! If you love sweet western romances, including sexy cowboys, this is the book for you, it will not disappoint! (and if you haven't tried a western romance, this is the time to try one! Only 99¢ to get your feet wet! And again, it will not disappoint you!)
The Shades of Blue Trilogy:
A Different Shade of Blue (Book 1 Shades of Blue)
The Darkest Blue (Book 2 Shades of Blue)
Every Blue Moon (Book 3 Shades of Blue)

Five out of five fairy kisses for this reader.

 Excerpt:

This is your home now, Adeline," Jackson told her, watching her closely for a reaction. "We were married earlier this afternoon. You are my wife."

The color drained from her face and she froze, her spoon halfway to her mouth. He feared she'd faint again so he jumped up and went to her. The action startled the woman, who yelped and leaned away from him, only to topple over. Both she and the chair landed on their sides on the floor.

When Jackson tried to help her up, she scrambled to her feet and moved away from his reach.

"Married?" The shock in her voice made him wonder if the woman was mad. Surely she remembered signing the documents before the judge?

"Yes, Adeline, the judge explained it all to you before you signed the papers at the hotel. Do you not remember?"

"I..." her widened eyes met his and he fought the urge to reach out to reassure her. "I thought it was a dream."

Desperate Surrender by Hildie McQueen

Publisher: Crescent Moon Press
Pages: 246

(Released: June 1, 2012)

From the Cover:

Wendy O'Sullivan's life drastically changes upon discovering she is not human- and then she is charged with guarding the Key of Peace. To make matters more complicated, she reunites with the Protector she's dreamed of since the day he rescued her from a demon attack.

Kieran Frasier, hasn't loved- much less kissed - a woman in over three hundred years with his heart firmly encased behind thick walls. The fierce immortal defends innocents from powerful demons, but can he defend himself from diminutive Wendy, who manages to get past all his barricades?

Faced with arranged marriages to others and battling demons that will stop at nothing to capture Wendy, will they be forced to surrender their chance at true love for the greater good?

Wendy O'Sullivan wants nothing more than to find love and keep it. She doesn't want to be the savior of her race, the keeper of some key she doesn't desire or need, she doesn't want to be forced into an arranged marriage. What she wants and dreams of is the Protector who saved her from the demons. Should it matter if she's not human? Her heart still breaks the same. She'll go to almost any length to be where her heart wants and needs to be. She doesn't want to desert the family and heritage, but can't love and obligation coincide? Will she survive the demons long enough to find out?

Kieran Frasier hasn't let his heart feel in too many years to remember. Since his failed marriage centuries ago, he's held his heart apart. Kissing is too personal, his needs may have to be met, but it isn't personal if his lips aren't involved. He appears cold and distant, but his blood is boiling hot. If he could only forget the young woman he saved, whose memories he had to wipe away... If he could have a do-over, he would claim what his dreams keep calling for. When he comes in contact if the same young woman once again under attack, he begins to wonder, she is really supposed to be part of his life?

When desire can no longer be denied, Kieran and Wendy come together regardless of Julian's demands or her family's needs. These two were surely meant to be together, or are they?

Desperate Surrender by Hildie McQueen is a paranormal romance to tug at your heart. Wendy is a resilient young heroine who goes to great lengths to prove herself worthy of the love Kieran wants to deny. The only problem is that he's lost his heart without even knowing it. The demons are even more desperate to achieve their desires and release an ancient evil. If they're successful, it would give them the ability to possibly topple the Protectors, taking control of humanity. Kieran has to find a way to have his heart's desire and save himself and his Protector family. And maybe he can with the help of the one person he's been forbidden from having, Wendy.

Desperate Surrender is just that, a surrender to the heart. No matter how hard Kieran wants to deny his heart, he cannot. He'd rather meet his end than give up the thing he thought he'd never have again, love. Wendy's family is trying to force her into an undesired marriage, one where love will never grow. Julian wants the same for Kieran. Neither will bow to the forces trying to control their lives even if it means destruction. Desperate Surrender not only pulls the characters, but the reader too. I found myself routing for Wendy and demanding Kieran (whom I fell in love with in Desperate Betrayal Book 1 of the Protector Series) follow his heart. It brought tears to my eyes more than once, a true tell of an excellent romance.

Five out of five fairy kisses for this reader.

Desperate Choices by Hildie McQueen

Publisher: Crescent Moon Press
Pages: 34

(Release Date: April 14, 2012)

From the Cover:

When an Immortal demon slayer saves Rachel Andrews from certain death, her life changes forever. An unbreakable bond with the handsome Protector, drags her into a world she never believed existed and has no desire to be part of.

The actions of one night drastically alter the course of his long existence. Torn between his feelings for Rachel and his life's calling, Roderick Cronan comes face to face with the fact that he is losing both.

Roderick Cronan can't leave the woman, even as life wants to slip away from her body. It goes against everything in his body and soul. He does the only thing he can do to save her.

Rachel Andrews wakes in a strange bed, not her own, and attracted to the most stunning male she's ever seen. This can't be happening, or at least, not in her quiet life.

What happens when a mortal woman is given the blood of an Immortal Warrior, A Protector? Neither can deny this fatal attraction, one that might change their lives forever.

Desperate Choices by Hildie McQueen is just that, a desperate choice... whether to save a life and risk possible exposure of the Protectors, or let the woman die, alone and broken, and not by her own actions. Roderick does what he has to, but in doing so, he may destroy the only life he's ever known. Rachel isn't given a choice, when she wakes, at least she still alive. But, at what cost?

Desperate Choice is a prequel to Desperate Betrayal. It's the story of Rachel and Roderick who is kidnapped in the first book (which if you read my review is a most excellent read). It's also our introduction to Cyn (hero of Desperate Betrayal) and Julian (sexy leader of the Protectors). And what a better way to try a new author? These little mini-reads, Crescent Moon Press' New Line, Little Moons, are an excellent opportunity. Each little read is only 99 cents!! What a great deal!! Rush on over to Amazon, and pick up a few of these tasty morsels! Five out of five fairy kisses for this reader.

Desperate Betrayal by Hildie McQueen

Publisher: Crescent Moon Press
Pages: 270

(Released: September 10, 2011)

From the Cover:

Cynden Frasier (Cyn) is a member of a group of immortal warriors, the Protectors, assigned to protect humans in Atlanta, Georgia, the epicenter of a major uprising in demon activity. When Cyn is approached by a beautiful woman in a dirty alley, he is intrigued by the fact that she can see him for what he is, a terrifying demon slayer, and still dares to approach him.

Emma Blake, a half-demon, has to convince Cyn to help rescue her sister from powerful demons. Terrified that the Protector will kill her if he realizes what she is, she still goes against every instinct and approaches Cyn for help. Despite knowing that she is leading them both into territory so wrought with treachery, neither of them may survive.

Can Cyn and Emma overcome betrayal, the ancient rules that prevent Protectors from taking a wife, unless she is his one true mate? And if they do, will it even matter?

Emma had done some things in her life that she wasn't exactly proud of... and trying to lure one of the Protectors away from safety and into the clutches of the demons was one of them. But, the demons had her sister, Briana, and not just any demon, but their cruel leader, Gerard. Briana was the only family Emma had left. She couldn't leave her to the demons, not even if Briana didn't listen. Not even if she was turned herself, Emma wouldn't or couldn't leave Briana to her fate. But, why did it have to be Cynden?

Cynden has been a Protector for nearly as long as he can remember. When the change came upon him, he had little choice of refusal. His brother, Kieran, struggled against the change, finally giving in to the inevitable. But, it was a good life, Cyn had done well, and he was still alive, him and Blue, his adopted son. He enjoyed what he did, demons were the bad guys, and if he could protect the humans, that much better. Until his life starts to lose focus, all because some woman wanders into his path, Emma, and her captured sister. Roderick, a former Protector and friend, is missing and it's ripping his wife, Rachel, apart.

Now, Emma tells Cyn, she knows where Roderick is, and it just happens to be with the demons. The ones holding her sister.

Desperate Betrayal by Hildie McQueen is an enchanting tale from it's beginnings. Emma becomes a Cyn stalker and an unwilling demon pawn, showing up when he least expects it. Only, he finds himself drawn to the woman, her eyes, his fingers itch to touch her hair and her body, her very scent drives his need. And it sends his Protector senses into heightened response. Life mate screams in his mind, but Protectors aren't allowed to take mates, which is what cost Roderick his place in the fold. Now, Roderick was gone with little hope of finding him, especially alive, and he can't even think it unless he wants Rachel to see it in his thoughts and actions. When Cyn can't leave Emma at the scene of a demon attack, he blindfolds her, drags her to his home on the back of his massive bike. Blue is delighted, but Cyn can't trust Blue's safety to anyone, and now Emma can't be released, not with Protector and his son's security at risk. His brother, Kieran, doesn't understand his need, but Cyn finds he does need Emma, in his life and his bed. When Emma tells him Roderick is being held captive by the demons, he must risk the tentative trust he's willing to give her, only to find betrayal in her heart.

Desperate Betrayal is exactly what the name implies, a desperate betrayal, one not willingly made or easily found. But demons control Emma's actions and she'll do what she has to, not only for her sister, but for the one who has stolen her heart, Cyn. What he sees as betrayal, she knows is sacrifice because she's willing to sell her life for his, even if he can't see it. She has to put an unfeeling tone in her voice, has to let Gerard take her lips in a demanding painful kiss. She only wants Cyn, and he only sees betrayal. No matter what else happens, Cyn must survive, and he only sees it with her sacrifice for Blue. Hildie McQueen gives us an excellent first novel, a story told with passion, desire, and need. When Cyn and Emma come together, the heat pours from the pages. This is the first book, and debut novel, of the Protectors series, and I can't wait to read Kieran's story, and I feel Fallon's may come too. So many great Protectors, so many potential stories to tell. Paranormal romance lovers, urban fantasy fans, and supernatural hero lovers will all want to give this one a try. It's a wonderful read, on my recommend list. Five out of five fairy kisses for this happy reader.
